February 27 - March 2 - Glacier Country

click here Glacier country is just beautiful. I know I'm repeating myself again and again. Hey, not my fault this country is so beautiful. So, Franz Josef glacier it was for today. The drive was actually longer than I expected so I checked out the options I might be interested in doing and talked to the DOC (Department of Conservation - or Conversation?) a bit. I eventually booked a guided walk to the foot of the glacier. The helicopter option was just a bit over my budget for now. (Oh dear, I just spelled 'budget' 'butchet' - brain, wake up, it's past noon.)...

February 26, 2018 - Serpentine, Turpentine

شراء سبائك الذهب في السعودية My little camouflage camping worked out well. At least I didn't find a ticket under my wipers so I assume all was good. I woke up before the alarm went off and I quickly changed from my nightdress into my daydress. Pants really. Then I drove to a public toilet I had seen the day before and did my business. I made fresh coffee and deiced to pay the local New World supermarket a visit to buy some high protein yogurt for my muesli and some coffee. Before 8.30 I was on my way to Jade country, Hokitika...

February 25, 2018 - Sea lions and Pancake rocks

follow link Sea lions aren't necessarily something extraordinary to me. I have seen them before even in the wild. But since I was close by I decide to go there anyway and saw and heard some cute howlers waddling on the rocks. I even took a little video - so much for nothing special.

click Back on Southern Highway Six my next stop was Pancake Rocks. What's that? It's a rock formation that looks like stacked pancakes. Sort of. But it's really cool and one of the many fascinating geological formations on earth. I think what Giant's Causeway is for Northern Ireland Pancake Rocks is for New Zealand. It's just cool.

February 24, 2018 - Longest Swing Bridge in New Zealand

No way, José. Instead I stopped a bit farther down the road and took a picture of it. Good enough for me.

The drive from Richmond to Westport on the west coast was spectacular. You drive along the mighty Buller River for most of the drive and it is the river with the most water in NZ. It has gold in it too and a council worker I talked to told me about a friend of his who is a professional gold washer. He makes between NZ$3000-4000 a week!

February 23, 2018 - Wine country, fashionable art and classic cars

I though I knew where I was but it turned out I didn't. After a quick breakfast I had hit the road and drove through more beautiful New Zealand countryside. I followed the signage to Nelson because that was the direction to the West Coast where I wanted to go first. I was a bit surprised when I saw all the vineyards in that area only to learn that I was in Marlborough County THE wine area for New Zealand wine.

February 22, 2018 - Wellington

I arrived in Wellington at around 11am and just drove around for a bit to get a quick feeling of the city. I would have liked to trade in my Groupon voucher for a 90min massage/beauty treatment but of course there are hardly opening on short notice. I have my treatment when I come back from the South Island. I had almost a day in Wellington before I had to catch the ferry. So I drove to the botanical garden, parked my car (free for 120min, yay) and walked around the beautiful park. At some point I recognized a lot of Australian trees and decided that that must be the Australia section. Sure enough, a sign around the corner told the visitor exactly that. Man, I'm good.

February 21, 2018 - Foxton

On my way to Wellington I stopped at the little town of Foxton because I needed a toilet break and some food. It is interesting what you come across during such unplanned stops. Foxton is a little Dutch colony if you will. Not in the sense of that is was 'discovered' and settled by Dutch settlers. Dutch immigrants who came to New Zealand after the WW2 were sent here to make this their new home. The Kiwi government back then had decided to prevent the Dutch (and I'm sure immigrants from other nations, too) from altogether moving to one area and this creating a little Dutch mainly colony and enclave.

So, I returned Arya to Arya. I liked my car but I didn't like all the problems I had with it. I was glad I got the whole sum of money back I bought the car for. Unfortunately the dealer wasn't willing to pay for my repairs. Okay, I wouldn't have either I guess, but it never hurts to ask.

February 15, 2018 - Ohope to Pukahoke

Two things happened today that are worth talking about.

1) In the morning a council person from Opohe showed up at the campground to check once again (I say once again because last night a colleague of hers had already done so) if every camper was indeed a certified self-contained camper.

February 14, 2018 - Valentine's Day on Ohope Beach

With a cup of freshly made coffee I took a walk on the beach early today. Happy Valentina Day to me! The sun was peaking over the hills and shone a warm brilliant golden colour onto the bay. I walked along the beach and there it was - my first paua shell. Not quite perfect since the corner was scraped off but I had my shell. And I didn't even buy it. What a start in the day.

February 6-8, 2018 - Coromandel Peninsula - wow

Because of my geographical location, I started to explore Coromandel Peninsular from the west. The first town on my way was Thames, a cute little town. Its town centre once again reminded me of an old town of the wild west of the USA. Interestingly enough Australians and even New Zealanders copied the American style of town planning even though both countries are much younger in their European civilisation.

February 5, 2018 - Time to play lotto

What can I say, I lost a day of travels because I had to wait for a car mechanic to look at Arya again. I had just driven an hour yesterday when I stopped for a toilet break. Just as I pulled in the parking lot, white steam burst out from under the hood. And it burst and burst. I walked around the car and unplugged my laptop from the radio, ready to grab it in case the car would set on fire. I then opened the hood and let the steam escape. It was not a pretty sight. 'Shit'

Okay, Northland is the whole region north of Auckland. I'm just mentioning it here specifically because you then know where I was. So, I free-camped at an official freedom campground in Totara. Oh my, what another beautiful campground in the green mountains. The view up the hills was spectacular. And then, at night the moon came up. It was just past full moon and it was still close to earth so it was big and yellow and gorgeous. And then I pulled the curtains in my van shut and went to sleep.
